Newmarket is a New England river town located in Rockingham County, New Hampshire. The small town runs along the banks of the Lamprey River and the Great Bay. Newmarket’s quiet downtown is located on the waterfront and is home to a new community center, salt water farms and new homes and condominiums. Newmarket is crossed by the New Hampshire’s Routes 108 and 152.
The town’s industry was once dominated by sawmills and textiles. The Newmarket Manufacturing Company, located on the waterfront, played a major role in the town’s economy for over a century. The company included seven mills, and had built river dams, and support structures which included multi-family homes for its workers. The company closed in 1929, and its buildings are now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, Newmarket is home to many high tech companies and small businesses and the old mills are being rebuilt and thriving into condominiums and local businesses.
According to the 2009 U.S. Census Bureau, Newmarket’s population at the time was 8,027 people. This is a 15% increase in population from the 2000 census. The average household size was 2.35. Many residents are students or employees at the University of New Hampshire in Durham which is only a 10 minute drive.
